Almost two years ago word broke that Anne Hathaway was ready to star in a film based on the life of the iconic Judy Garland. Well, you may have forgotten about it, but she hasn't.
“It’s a very sensitive project and there have been so many stories told about her life that we’re really trying to get it right,” Hathaway told the BBC (by way of The Playlist). “So we’ve taking our time with it. I know it seems like it’s sort of an endless process but it’s very, very slow incremental steps. I had a meeting about it a couple of weeks ago and we’re all very motivated.”
The film, which Harvey Weinstein is producing, will be based on Gerald Clarke's 2001 Garland biography, "Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland."
The story is a tragic one, to say the least. Born Ethel Gumm into a family of vaudevillians, she first took the stage at the age of 2, and basically didn't leave until her death from an accidental overdose some 45 years later.
Along the way she was fondled, addicted to drugs, belittled, made and lost millions, married five times, had three kids--including Liza Minnelli. Oh, and was one of the most popular singers and actresses of her generation. There's no shortage of material for a film here.
The big question about this production is the matter of who will sing for Garland in the film. Hathaway intends to do her own singing, but admits she doesn't sing like Garland and that "people might cry murder" if they don't get to hear the Garland's voice.
In the meantime, Hathaway can be seen opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in "Love and Other Drugs."
