Hacker group Anonymous has purportedly released a video asking Facebook users to join their cause and destroy Facebook for the sake of their own privacy.
The video says the destruction of Facebook, known as Operation Facebook, will occur on Nov. 5, also known as Guy Fawkes Day -- and Anonymous has extensively used a Guy Fawkes mask to hide individual identities, according to CNET. From the video:
"Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. Some of these so-called whitehat infosec firms are working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria."
Although the information is unsubstantiated, Facebook declined comment to CNN, but Facebook founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has previously stated, "We do not share your personal information with people or services you don't want."
The video ends on a photo of Zuckerberg leaning against the Facebook sign with the digitally enhanced voiceover saying, "We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us."
While some may question why Anonymous is targeting the social network, the group says that it's saving us. I'm not sure if that's the case, but we do know that taking down Facebook would be an extremely huge coup for Anonymous.
