Eric Schmidt, Google's loose-lipped chairman, told a crowd at the Dreamforce conference in San Francisco that the latest Android update would be here by November.
"We have a new operating system, internally known as Ice Cream Sandwich for some reason, which is being released in October/November, which everyone's really excited about," Schmidt told Salesforce chief executive Marc Benioff on a YouTube video of the conference.
We first heard about Android's Ice Cream Sandwich at Google I/O in May, with Google explaining the new Android version would bring tablet capability to Android smartphones. However, with Ice Cream Sandwich coming in as little as three weeks, that could mean Android's rumored smartphone, Nexus Prime, may be coming out in November or early December, AndroidandMe reported.
The video continues with Schmidt praising Steve Jobs's work at Apple as "the best performance of a CEO in the last 50 to 100 years" and a discussion of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg's early decisions that shaped the social network.
The news that Ice Cream Sandwich is coming out sooner than expected means that it's more likely newer innovations will also be coming out earlier. We can only hope that Google will also upgrade its newer devices to the latest version of Android.
