SACTOWN TO SIERRA NEVADA: This is true, and it may be true for you, too. Type the words "Nevada City" and "food" on any web site and we literally are on board with anything the site may be talking about. But mix in some more goodness, like foodie excursions in the foothills-sweet town of Murphys, and eating around some of Sacramento's tastiest neighborhoods, and we're signing up. Local Roots Food Tours covers the general Sacramento Valley, with a few fantastic field trips (we're going to call Murphys, which is pretty deep into Gold Country, a field trip here). And after the Nevada City bit our favorite part has to be the fact that Local Roots also visits specialty stores in addition to restaurants. That would be our main note for any food tour that just sticks to the traditional kitchens-and-tables venues; hit the places that serve at counters or offer samples of gourmet treats sold within. Many tours already do this, and hooray to that.
THE TOURS: There are a number to choose from, but Origins of Sacramento Food and Walking Tour tempts. Four words: Amaretto Custard French Toast (that's listed as a "typical tasting," so it may not be on your particular tour, but we're just going to put those words at the center of our heart for the rest of the day). An adult ticket for this tour is $58.
