Rep. Jackie Speier told her House colleagues -- from the House floor -- that she had a 'procedure' when she was 17 weeks into the pregnancy.
The debate over Title X funding -- including Planned Parenthood and many other public health care programs -- is getting more and more heated as the Republican majority is pressing for greater restrictions.
Speier was reacting to statements made by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), who is a staunch anti-abortion advocate, when she said:
"I planned to speak about something else. But the gentleman from New Jersey just put my stomach in knots," Speier began. "I'm one of those women he spoke about just now. I had a procedure at 17 weeks pregnant with a child who moved from the vagina into the cervix. The procedure you just described is the procedure I endured."
She added that it would be preposterous to think that an abortion is undertaken "cavalierly."
