Shareef Allman Killed Himself: Coroner

Cupertino rampage suspect was initially reported as being killed by deputy fire

A man suspected of carrying out a mass shooting last week at a Cupertino rock quarry died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's Office.

Shareef Allman, 49, of San Jose, was suspected in a workplace shooting at Lehigh Permanente quarry which left three people dead and six injured last Thursday.

A tenth person, a woman, was injured during a failed carjacking three hours later and five miles away in a Hewlett-Packard parking lot.

Tuesday the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's Office said in a statement that Allman died of  "a self-inflicted contact gunshot wound to the head."

Cpt. Kevin Jensen with the M.E.'s office said although there were other bullet wounds to Allman's body, the bullet that killed him came from Allman's own gun.

“There were other wounds on the body, and everyone was examined by investigators, but it was determined that the self-inflicted, contact wound to the head was the fatal injury,” Jensen said.

Initially it was reported that Allman was killed after being shot multiple times by Santa Clara County sheriff's deputies.  The medical examiner would not release how many other wounds he found on the body.

Shortly after Allman allegedly carried out the shootings, a manhunt for his whereabouts began.

Three sheriff's deputies were on a patrol of a Sunnyvale neighborhood when they spotted Allman. Their patrol cars pulled up next to each other in front of a home on Lorne Way and one of the deputies noticed movement in a nearby driveway.

Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith said Allman was crouched behind a vehicle.  She said when deputies attempted to make contact with him he displayed a firearm in a threatening manner so they shot him multiple times.

It wasn't until Tuesday that we learned that Allman also shot himself during that time.
