San Jose will keep trying to land the Oakland Athletics and build a Major League Baseball park in Silicon Valley -- even if it takes another seven years.
"The San Jose project is still alive," Mayor Chuck Reed announced to the San Jose Mercury News, after inking a deal to continue negotiating to bring the A's to San Jose for up to seven years.
The A's have signed a 10-year lease extension in Oakland at O.co Coliseum. But they can exit that lease to move to San Jose, the newspaper reported.
San Jose, however, is still San Francisco Giants country. The Giants have "territorial rights" under MLB rules to the South Bay city, and so far, court action by San Jose to get baseball to say if it would approve a move has been unsuccessful.
But San Jose will have another seven years to try to make it happen.
A's owner Lew Wolff called the deal "an option, and we want to keep our options open."
