A new Bay Area billboard is calling on the California Commission on Judicial Performance to remove Judge Aaron Persky from the bench after his controversial decision for a six month sentence in the Brock Turner sexual assault case.
UltraViolet, a national women’s advocacy organization, announced Monday that the billboard will be located on Highway 92 in hopes of gaining more supporters to petition Persky.
"By protecting a rapist over the survivor of his crimes, Persky has undermined confidence in our judicial system and is unfit to provide justice for the survivors of sexual assault," said Nita Chaudhary, co-founder of UltraViolet.
The billboard is not the first time UltraViolet has protested. In the past three weeks, the organization commissioned a plane to fly over Stanford University during commencement ceremonies with a banner that read, "Protect Survivors. Not Rapists. #PerskyMustGo." UltraViolet also placed a full-page ad in the Stanford Daily’s graduation issue inviting students and alumni to take a stand against rape culture, delivered more than 1 million signatures and organized a letter of more than 1,000 Stanford Alumni petitioning for his removal.
"If we all speak out, we can generate enough outrage to force California’s judicial oversight commission to remove Judge Persky from the bench -- and send a message to judges and law enforcement everywhere that rape culture has no place in our courts,” UltraViolet stated on its campaign web page.
