Bay Area High Schools Make Newsweek's Top 500 List

Newsweek has ranked the top 500 high schools in the United States and more than 50 California high schools, including several from the Bay Area made the list.

Several criteria went into compiling the list of the best schools, including average SAT scores, average AP scores, ACT scores, graduation rates, college bound percentages, college readiness and more.

Gretchen Whitney High in Cerritos came in at number six, the only California school in the top 10.

Piedmont High in Piedmont came in next, at number 25, with a 1894 average SAT score.

Oxford Academy in Cypress came in at number 26.

San Jose's Lynbrook High came in at number 38, with a 100.9% student retention rate and an average SAT score of 1996. Monte Vista High in Cupertino is number 40, with a 100.3% student retention rate and a 2001 average SAT score,

Palos Verdes Peninsula High in Rolling Hills Estates is 72.

University High in Irvine come s in at 74. California Academy Of Mathematics And Science in Carson, CA is 78.

Redwood High in Larkspur is 87, with a 1755 average SAT score.

Other Bay Area school that made the list include University High in Fresno at number 98, Aragon High in San Mateo at 100, Los Altos High in Los Altos at 113 and San Francisco's Lowell High at number 138.

Newsweek ranked Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Virginia as the top high school in the country.
