School Closings: San Francisco, Oakland, North Bay Districts Cancel Classes

Ahead of the big storm headed toward the Bay Area, several school districts in the North Bay, as well as San Francisco and Oakland, have announced they are canceling classes.

SOUTH BAY

The San Jose Unified School District sent an email to parents late Wednesday afternoon stating classes will be in session on Thursday. The district will be monitoring the weather, the statement said.

Evergreen and San Jose city colleges are closed.

SAN FRANCISCO

The San Francisco Unified School District has canceled classed for Thursday. Officials say they will monitor the storm's impact on school buildings and advise parents to check their website for updates.

Classes at South San Francisco Unified School District are also canceled on Thursday, according to board president Maurice Goodman. The South San Francisco district announced late Thursday afternoon classes would be canceled Friday as well. Pacifica and Millbrae school districts have also decided to cancel classes on Thursday.

City College of San Francisco will also be closed on Thursday. Officials said the school would reopen Friday. San Francisco State University will also be closing Thursday because of the potentially dangerous wind and rainstorm. SFSU will remain closed through 8 a.m. Friday.

Golden Gate University is closed.

PENINSULA

The Redwood City school district late Wednesday announced classes would be canceled on Thursday.

The Burgligame School District closed.

The San Mateo Foster City School District canceled classes from preschool through 8th grade, though the high schools are still in session.

Skyline College is closed.

Further south, in San Mateo County, the Millbrae School District announced on its website its five schools would be closed Thursday. And the San Mateo-Foster City school district has closed its schools, preschool to eighth grade, Thursday due to the storm, according to district spokeswoman Molly Barton.

Mercy High School in Burlingame is closed on Thursday.

EAST BAY

Oakland Unified School District officials canceled school and said in a statement, "This is not a decision we make lightly, but given the severe weather predictions and the safety implications for students and staff, we want to take every precaution in order to safeguard our community."

Schools in the Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Castro Valley, Hayward, New Haven (Union City), Newark, Fremont, and West Contra Costa districts will also be closed on Thursday.

In Richmond, Manzanita Charter MIddle School is closed.

NORTH BAY

In Sonoma County, the following schools will be closed: Guerneville School, Harmony Elementary School, Salmon Creek Charter School and Montgormery Elementary School.

The Novato Unified School District originally canceled classes for both Thursday, Dec. 11 and Friday, Dec. 12.

In Marin County, the following private and independent schools will be closed: Brandeis Hillel Day School School, Branson School, Good Shepherd Lutheran School School (Thurs. & Fri.), Marin Catholic High School School, Marin Christian Academy School, Marin Country Day School School, Marin Formative Christian Preschool, Marin Horizon School School, Marin Montessori School, Marin Primary & Middle School School, Mark Day School School, Montessori de Terra Linda School, San Domenico School School, St. Anselm Elementary School School, St. Isabella School School, Star Academy School, The Kid's Place School and Timothy Murphy School School.

In Napa County, Calistoga Joint Unified Schools will be closed.

The National Weather Service has issued high wind and flash flood watches issued for the entire Bay Area.
