As cyclists were warned not to get too dehydrated on Tuesday during the Amgen Tour from San Jose to Mt. Diablo, swimmers hit the pool in Walnut Creek and cooling centers opened their doors to hot residents all over the Bay Area.
With temperatures expected to reach the low 90s in parts of the Bay Area and possible more than 100 degrees inland, customers were already lined up at Richert's Ace Hardware in Pleasanton, poised to buy fans to keep them cool.
Store clerk Jackie McKeown wasn't just selling the fans - she bought one, too.
"I don't have air conditioning," she said., adding that she put her new fan "right by my pillow."
A third consecutive Spare the Air alert was issued in the Bay Area for Wednesday, air quality officials said Tuesday.
Tuesday was hot all over the state.
In Southern California, temperatures were expected to rise above the infamously hot Death Valley.
Typical high temperatures this time of year in the Bay Area usually hover about 64 degrees, and the record high was 82 degrees in 1972. Temperatures are supposed to be even hotter on Wednesday.
