Starting Tuesday, parking in Palo Alto's downtown neighborhoods is by permit only.
Vehicles that don’t bear the so-called residential preferential program permit can only park in the area for two hours between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, according to city officials. Drivers who disobey the new rule will be cited.
The program will affect the area bordered by Palo Alto Avenue, Guinda Street, Lincoln Avenue, Embarcadero Road and Alma Street.
Residents can get up to four permits free. Downtown Palo Alto employees can buy an annual permit for $466 while low-wage employees can purchase it for $100.
During the last month, the city has unveiled more than 800 “Parking by Permit” signs. This new program aims to prevent Caltrain and Stanford University commuters from usurping parking spots all day, officials said.
