A man found dead inside a vehicle Sunday morning in Oakley may have suffered from a pre-existing medical condition, according to Contra Costa County sheriff's officials.
Firefighters who were dispatched to a call on Bethel Island at 7:26 a.m. were leaving East Contra Costa Fire Protection District Station 93 on O'Hara Avenue when they located a vehicle stopped on the driveway.
At 7:30 a.m., police officers responded to a report of a vehicle blocking the station's driveway and found a body inside it,
According first responders, who found a lot of blood in the vehicle, the man appeared to have sustained traumatic injuries. It’s possible the victim was driving to the fire station to seek medical treatment but didn't make it in time, they said.
Police shut down a portion of O’Hara Avenue and asked commuters to avoid the area while they investigate the death. Investigators are still to determine what caused the man's death.
Although the man's death was initially believed to be suspicious, a preliminary investigation does not indicate foul play, sheriff's officials said.
Further details were not immediately available.
