A San Jose neighborhood was shut down Sunday morning when a man with a machete went on a rampage.
Neighbors said around 10:30 a.m., the man went walking around the neighborhood with a machete on Mocho Court near the Tully Road U.S. Highway 101 exit. Later, he smashed a car with the weapon and then went into his garage and started lighting items on fire, witnesses said.
Police surrounded him and took him into custody, specifically for mental evaluation.
But his sister, Julie Gutierrez, said he may have wanted police to take his life and he needs medical help. She added he has a history of mental illness and has used crystal meth.
"He actually needs help," she said. "He doesn't need to be going to jail or being charged with this. He needs help. Counseling, therapy, something."
The suspect has not been identified, and nobody was hurt.
