A 9-year-old Oakland girl has been hospitalized after school officials said the mother of a schoolmate attacked her with a hammer.
The attack was reported Friday morning at Lafayette Elementary School in West Oakland. School officials said the woman lured the third grader into a bathroom during recess and began hitting her with a hammer.
The child was seriously injured, but is expected to recover, officials said.
School officials said the suspected attack may have been an act of revenge.
"We don't know the reason for the attack. The early speculation -- and this is not definitive -- this act evolved out of a family feud, which is off campus and spilled into the school yard," said Troy Flint, Oakland Unified School District spokesman.
The suspect is the mother of a second-grade student who often volunteers at the school, officials said. She was arrested at the scene, police said.
