A two-alarm fire destroyed 16 cars and caused extensive damage to a carport early Friday morning in Campbell, according to a fire captain.
Flames were reported at 2:48 a.m. in the 400 block of Dover Way, according to Fire Capt. Bill Murphy with the Santa Clara County Fire Department.
On scene, fire fighters observed five vehicles burning under a carport and called for a second-alarm response.
The fire was under control by 3:30 a.m. No injuries were reported and no residents were displaced.
The blaze damaged storage units and fencing leading to homes. However, firefighters were able to save six vehicles that might have otherwise burned.
The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
Campbell neighbors on Friday morning said they heard explosions in their backyard and woke up to see at least a dozen cars burning. Many thanked their pets who may have been the first to smell smoke. Their barks woke their owners, who then reported the fire.

"My husband woke me up and said, 'There's a fire' and I got to go. So he moved his car first, then came back for mine, but it was too late," said Shiela Dollar.
