Just hours after announcing his candidacy for California Governor, Gavin Newsom hit the campaign trail and headed to San Diego.
The 41 year old Mayor San Francisco visited Sapphire Energy, a bio tech company in La Jolla. The company is trying to convert algae into alternative fuels.
"I'm very intense and passionate about the environment and have been for more years than I've been in public life," Newsom said.
Gavin Newsom gained national attention for his vocal support of gay marriage. He was asked about the controversy involving Carrie Prejean. The Miss USA contestant from San Diego told judges her opinion of same sex marriage.
"In my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman," Prejean said.
Newsom defended Prejean's right to an opinion.
"I want to challenge her on her point of view, but she spoke her conscience, I think she's being a little unfairly maligned," Newsom said.

The gubernatorial candidate considers the environment one of his biggest issues, along with education. But he said the budget is the biggest issue he will tackle as Governor.
"We need to substantively look at modernizing our tax strategies and reforming medicare," Newsom said.
