San Francisco has been scratched off the list for the Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure Foundation’s three-day walk in 2014.
The organization said the city by the bay is one of seven cities that apparently aren’t meeting fundraising goals.
In the past, the walk has attracted thousands of people in the Bay Area to help raise money for breast cancer research. But participation has declined.
The decision to cancel the walk in several cities comes after the Komen founder last year trying to stop sending funds to Planned Parenthood. Planned parenthood provides women’s health services, screenings, and controversial abortions. The funding decision was later reversed. In addition to the Planned Parenthood controversy, the Komen organization believes the sour economy and competition from other charities could be a factors in the dropoff.
The three-day walk is also canceled in Phoenix, Tampa Bay, Cleveland, Boston, Chicago and Washington, DC. Seven other cities will continue. This does not affect the popular Race for the Cure.
