In 1981 Dr. Paul Volberding was doing rounds on his first day at San Francisco General when he found a patient who presented symptoms of a rare cancer, Kaposi Sarcoma. He reported his findings. Hundreds of more would follow. The AIDS epidemic was born. The compassionate care patients found in the nation’s first AIDS ward at SF General showed the best of the Bay Area.
