“Game of Thrones” directors Daniel Minahan and David Nutter aim to make the show's bloody fight scenes more authentic.
In a recent casting notice, HBO is seeking extras who are “leg only, male amputees” for a pivotal battle scene scheduled for filming this weekend.
According to fan site Westeros.org, Ireland-based extras casting company Extras NI put out the call, and asked that the inquiring extras provide “a clear description regarding where your limb is missing eg. at knee, at ankle, etc.”
The notice also requires the extras to be "OK and comfortable with filming a scene within the context of a battle where your leg has been injured. Prosthetic makeup will be applied as though your leg has newly been severed. We understand that this is not for everyone, so please only apply if you are happy to participate."
The Red Wedding massacre is a turning point in George R. R. Martin’s popular series of fantasy novels, according to the Westeros.org fan site. If staged according to its description in the third novel “A Storm of Swords,” the Red Wedding scene will require hundreds of extras.
The casting notice also called for scores of musicians. “Ideally men with medieval or period faces (i.e long hair & beard) but not essential,” it read.
Filming for the hit HBO show began Thursday in Ireland, according to Today’s The Clicker blog. The third season of “Game of Thrones” is set to premiere in March, and was mainly shot in Belfast.
