18 people rescued after boat capsized near Brisbane

NBC Universal, Inc.

Eighteen people were rescued in a boating accident in San Mateo County Saturday morning.

The incident happened just before 9 a.m. off the Brisbane Marina, close to Oyster Marina.

U.S. Coast Guard officials say they received a mayday call that a boat capsized and 18 people were dumped overboard into the bay.

A Coast Guard rescue boat picked up 15 people from the water, and Brisbane firefighters rescued the remaining three.

Oyster Point Marina Harbor Master Jim Smith said the rescuers were part of a club rowing in a large platform kayak. He added that the Harbor Patrol had rescued 15 people, and the Brisbane Harbor master and Police Department had located the remaining three people in the water.

The rescued included a few children.

"It happens a lot," said Captain Steve Gutierrez of Deadliest Kast Sport Fishing. "Kayakers underestimate the tides and the weather. I myself have rescued kayakers because they get in trouble, and they can’t manage the tides."

Paramedics treated all the boaters on the shore, but nobody was injured.
