A 300-pound bronze statue stolen from the University of California Berkeley Boathouse has been recovered and an arrest has been made in the theft, police said Tuesday.
The life-size statue of UC Berkeley Crew Coach Carrol "Ky" Ebright, valued at $80,000, was reported missing from on Jan. 12.
UC Berkeley police said an officer with the San Leandro Police Department discovered the statue Saturday night inside a pickup truck. The officer noticed the truck, which was parked in San Leandro, had expired registration.
Further investigation by San Leandro police revealed the truck contained the statue, which had been partially disassembled, police said.
Dean Gamaza, 46, was identified as the suspect in the theft and arrested on suspicion of stolen property and felony vandalism, police said.
Ebright coached Cal crew teams to earn three Olympic gold medals and multiple other championships between 1924 and 1959. He was inducted into the United States Rowing Hall of Fame in 1956.
