As if there were any doubts about which of his quarterbacks will start this Sunday against the Texans, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan dispelled them Monday.
It will be Jimmy Garoppolo.
Even with rookie C.J. Beathard healing up, the offense will be guided by Garoppolo in Houston as the 49ers try to follow up their victory over the Bears this past weekend with another. Shanahan said Garoppolo wasn’t perfect, but he was impressive. The job is his. Suddenly, the 49ers are excited again, even in the midst of a horrible season.
“It was fun to watch,” said Shanahan. “You could tell Jimmy made some impressive throws. There were definitely situations where he got a little confused, and he still was able to make plays. It was very impressive to keep his poise and make some plays when things weren’t perfect.”
Garoppolo was 26-of-37 for 293 yards and had a passer rating of 82.4.
Though San Francisco came away with the win to improve to 2-10, the Garoppolo-led offense had its troubles, settling for five field goals and no touchdowns despite getting into the red zone five times. Shanahan said some of the problems were the result of penalties that stalled momentum. But the offense needs to be more efficient near the goal line.
“The tighter it gets, the more exact you have to be,” Shanahan said. “Everything gets tighter and the windows get smaller, so you have to execute very well. We didn’t as a whole team. It wasn’t just Jimmy.”
