Police detained a man after an hourslong standoff at a San Bruno home Sunday. Alyssa Goard reports.

Police detained a man who entered a San Bruno home Sunday after an hourslong standoff.

Neighbors near the home say they woke up to the sounds of someone knocking on a door and yelling, starting at around 6 a.m.

Officers, who came after someone reported a burglary, arrived and got the people living in the home out. But the man stayed inside for more than six hours as police tried to coax him into leaving, according to neighbors.

With the street cordoned off, officers had their weapons drawn and were shouting commands at him from outside the house. Neighbors said it was a scary morning with the SWAT team on the street and a drone flying overhead.

“It was a guy knocking on the door, right there, of that house,” said Leonel Hernandez, recalling what happened at 6:00 a.m.“On the windows right there, yelling ‘open the door, open the door.’ And then he broke one of the windows and got inside.”

“At around 10:00 a.m. in the morning, they told me ‘you have to evacuate, it’s not safe for you to stay inside, please get out,'" recalled neighbor Sadie Queally-Sammut.

Several other neighbors close by said they were asked to evacuate.

Once the standoff ended, neighbors said they saw police escorting a man out of the house.

Police said this suspect was detained and that no one was injured in this incident. However, police have not said anything yet about why the intruder entered the house or what he was doing inside for so long.

"Strange? For this block, yeah. Everybody knows everybody," said neighbor Todd Girish.

“It was extremely surprising and deeply unnerving,” said Sadie Queally. “And I am just hopeful that San Bruno Police have everything covered from here on out. And I am confident that they do.”

Another neighbor gave NBC Bay Area video of what they say is police detaining the man this afternoon.

The people who live there are safe and doing okay, according to one family member.
