A bat found at Southland Mall in Hayward tested positive for rabies, health officials said.
The bat was found at the mall's entrance near HomeTown Buffet on Feb. 5, and was submitted to the Alameda County Public Health Laboratory on Wednesday for testing.
Health officials said this is the first rabid bat in Alameda County this year. Last year, rabies was detected in two bats found in the county.
Health officials said anyone who touched or may have been bitten by the bat found at Southland Mall may have been exposed to rabies and should call the Alameda County Health Department at 510-267-3250. Anyone whose pet may have had contact with this bat should call Hayward Animal Control at 510-293-7200.
