Bay Area storm: Downed trees, road closures, flooding, landslides

A series of storms hit the Bay Area this weekend with the wet weather expected to last through Wednesday.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch that began Sunday morning and it will last through Wednesday morning for the entire Bay Area.

Here's a breakdown of the storm-related issues we're tracking.

Tuesday, Feb. 20

Flooding closes sections of North Bay highways

Flooding forced the California Highway Patrol and Caltrans to close sections of state Highway 121 and state Highway 12 south of the city of Sonoma Tuesday night. 

Part of state Highway 12 also known as Broadway was closed in both directions Tuesday night at about 8 p.m. between Fremont Road and Watmaugh Road, in an unincorporated area of Sonoma County. 

Niles Canyon closed at least through Friday

A full closure of the segment of State Highway 84 known as Niles Canyon Road, in Alameda County, will remain in effect until at least Friday after a chunk of the roadway collapsed on Monday. 

Flash flood warning for San Francisco

Flash flood warning for San Francisco and Brisbane in effect until 4 p.m.

Mudslide blocks portion of Highway 9 near Saratoga

Highway 9 is closed between Sanborn and Redwood Gulch roads due to a mudslide, the city of Saratoga said.

Crews hope to clear the mudslide and reopen the highway by 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Downed tree blocks Highway 9 in Santa Cruz County

A tree came down across Highway 9 in Santa Cruz County early Tuesday, closing down the roadway at Glengarry Road, near Felton, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Monday, Feb. 19

Tree falls onto I-280 in Burlingame

A large eucalyptus tree fell across Interstate 280 in Burlingame Monday evening.

It fell on the southbound lanes just before the Trousdale Exit at around 6:40 p.m.

One lane stayed open, but it still created a pretty big backup on the freeway.

No one was hurt.

All lanes reopened before 10 p.m.

Tree falls onto car in Campbell

Campbell police are warning residents to be cautious during this stormy weather after a tree toppled onto a car.

Fallen tree and debris block Contra Costa County road

Pinehurst Road is shut down between Canyon Road and Skyline Boulevard due to a fallen tree and debris.

Downed power pole crushes car in Pittsburg

A power pole toppled early Monday in Pittsburg, crushing a car and leaving some residents without power.

The pole came down after the car slammed into it on East Leland Road near the old firehouse, according to police. It was not immediately clear if there were any injuries or if the weather contributed to the crash.

PG&E crews were at the scene working on repairs, and they expected to have power restored by about 2 p.m., the utility said.

Niles Canyon Road closure near Sunol

The eastbound direction of Niles Canyon Road, west of Sunol, is closed indefinitely due to storm damage, according to the California Highway Patrol.

One-way traffic control is in place along the roadway, part of Highway 84, just east of Palomares in Alameda County due to a slipout, Caltrans said.

Sunday, Feb. 18

Road closures due to severe weather

Caltrans tweeted Sunday night that three highways were closed due to severe weather conditions:

  • Highway 12 from Fremont Road. to Watmaugh Road in Sonoma County due to flooding.
  • Highway 121 just north of Highway 116 Arnold Drive to Eighth Street in Sonoma County due to flooding.
  • Highway 9 between Sanborn Road to Redwood Gulch in Saratoga in Santa Clara County due to a landslide.

Highway 128 closed in Geyserville due to landslide

Crews closed Highway 128 in Geyserville indefinitely with crews already due to a landslide Sunday evening.

It's not known at this time when the area will reopen.

Heavy rain, strong winds, high surf and thunderstorms are expected. for Monday as a strong storm arrived in the Bay Area Sunday. Rob Mayeda, Marianne Favro and Alyssa Goard report. 

Vallejo opens warming center

The city of Vallejo will open its warming center until Wednesday morning in anticipation of the coming storm.

The warming center will be open 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. each day and is located in the Vallejo Room of the JFK Library, at 505 Santa Clara Street, in Vallejo.

The city is seeking volunteers to help with the warming center through Wednesday morning. If interested, go to signupgenius.com.

San Francisco officials asking public to avoid walking near trees amid storm

NBC Bay Area's Alyssa Goard reported Sunday evening that San Francisco officials are asking the public to avoid walking near trees, especially in parks due to the storm.

Stern Grove, the San Francisco Botanical Garden and the Japanese Tea Garden will be closed during the storm.

All lanes blocked on Highway 9 in Santa Clara County

Caltrans reported Sunday evening that all lanes were blocked on State Route 9 in Santa Clara County. This was due to a slide removal between Sanborn Road to Redwood Gulch in Saratoga.

They advising drivers to expect delays and use alternate routes. The slide removal is tentatively scheduled until Monday.

Evacuation warning issued for River Fire burn scar area

An evacuation warning has gone out for the River Fire Burn Scar area of Monterey County on Sunday evening, the county said.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office has issued an evacuation warning for the areas downslope of the River Fire Burn Scar on River Road as of 5:30 p.m.

These streets include Berry Drive, Pine Canyon Road, the 800 block of River Road, Limekiln Road and Parker Road.

A flash-flood watch has been in effect for the area that will run through Wednesday morning, as well.

Highway 1 closure near Tomales due to flooding

Highway 1 was shut down in both directions in Marin County Sunday evening due to flooding.

Video in the area showed the flooded roadway near Tomales.

Crews said two people had to abandon their car after it got stuck in the middle of the road.

It’s unclear when the highway will reopen.

BART says trains running slower due to wet weather

BART said at 2:52 p.m. Sunday it's running trains at slower speeds due to wet weather.

BART officials said people should watch their step on wet stairways and platforms.

Flash flooding in Marin County

Parts of the Bay Area saw flash flooding Saturday night.

In the North Bay community of Fairfax, some streets were turned into rivers.

Marin County was one of the areas that was hit hard by this storm and made it dangerous for drivers.

After a light to moderate rain in parts of the Bay Area Saturday, a stronger storm is coming to the region for Sunday. Rob Mayeda and Marianne Favro report. 

Downed Tree in Santa Rosa

The Santa Rosa Fire Department reported Saturday evening that a large tree came down in the 1000 block of Fourth St. They added the incident led to an isolated power outage.

Several San Mateo County parks closed due to winds

Seven San Mateo County parks were closed Saturday due to high winds, the county parks department said.

The parks will be closed until conditions are safe, the department said in a social media post.

The closures came as the National Weather Service issued a wind advisory Saturday for the Bay Area and Central Coast. South winds of 25 mph to 35 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph, were forecast from 10 a.m. Sunday to 4 a.m. Tuesday.

The parks that were closed are:

  • Devil's Slide Trail
  • Quarry Park
  • Fitzgerald Marine Reserve
  • San Pedro Valley
  • Pillar Point Bluff
  • Mirada Surf
  • Moss Beach Park
