A big rig crash on eastbound I-80 Highway near Carquinez Bridge closed all but one lane early Friday morning and another crash in the traffic back-up at Pomona left at least one person injured and another dead. All lanes have since been reopened.
A big rig that was carrying pineapples turned over after 1 a.m. and the driver was rescued by a passerby from the vehicle before it caught on fire, according to California Highway Patrol.
CHP said good Samaritans pulled the big rig driver from the burning wreckage and the driver only sustained minor injuries. The incident closed all but one lanes on the highway and the traffic that followed caused another incident on the highway.
In a separate following accident around 3:54 a.m., a vehicle rear-ended another big rig in the traffic and the driver sustained major injuries, CHP said.
The driver, identified as a 67-year-old man from Fairfield, was transported to Kaiser Hospital in Vallejo where he was pronounced dead, according to Contra Costa CHP.
CHP officials performed CPR on the man but he eventually succumed to his injuries.
The second crash closed all lanes on the eastbound I-80 but one has been reopened since. CHP said the lanes were cleared by 10 a.m.
