Members of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity at the University of California at Berkeley didn't know Christopher Stevens - the slain U.S. Ambassador to Libya killed Sept. 11 in Benghazi.

But he was still their brother.

That’s why the fraternity - of which Stevens was a part of in the '80s when he attended Cal as a history major -held a candlelight vigil Wednesday to honor him as a hero.

They are proud of a man who went to their school, and who was appointed by President Barack Obama in May to serve as the ambassador to Libya.

"Although we are sadden by his death, we are proud of our brother for sacrificing his life in service to our country," fraternity president Derek Sayler said.

Even back when he was a college student, friends and family said Stevens had dreams of becoming a diplomat.

His uncle, Don Slicer, called his nephew brilliant .

“He got this job strictly because of the quality of his work," Slicer said. "A lot of ambassadorships are handed out like a deck of cards. This wasn’t the case."
