A man and a woman carjacked a Meals on Wheels delivery van Thursday morning in Fremont, police said, and then led police on a pursuit onto Interstate 580 in Castro Valley, where the van flipped over.

Police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said the two suspects, a 45-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman, tried to carjack at least one other driver before taking the truck from the Meals on Wheels distribution center about 10 a.m.

Police pursued the truck for nearly 15 miles to the eastbound onramp at Redwood Road in Castro Valley. There, the patrol cars were able to maneuver into its path, causing it to flip onto its side.

The suspects were arrested, and one was bitten by a dog in the K-9 unit. They're facing charges of carjacking, evading police and resisting arrest.

The Meals on Wheels truck delivers hot meals to hundreds of elderly people across Silicon Valley. While the agency has a backup truck, it said the damaged truck will need to be replaced at a cost of about $45,000.
