San Francisco 49er wide receiver Michael Crabtree will not face criminal charges in connection with a sexual assault investigation.
San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon said late Friday no charges will be filed out of his office.
“The San Francisco Police Department - Special Victims Unit completed and submitted a thorough investigation of the allegations against Michael Crabtree. Following a review of all the evidence, my office has determined that no charges will be filed against Michael Crabtree at this time," Gascon's statement read.
The 49ers were quick to make a statement of their own, clearly relieved they can put the matter behind them and focus on the Super Bowl.
“We are pleased to learn of the San Francisco District Attorney’s announcement following a thorough review of the matter. Michael and the team can now put this behind us and move forward," General Manager Trent Baalke said in a statement.
Exactly a week ago, the San Francisco police department issued a press release that said an alleged assault happened in a San Francisco hotel in the early morning hours of Sunday, Jan. 13. That would have been in the hours after the 49ers beat the Green Bay Packers at Candlestick park to advance to the NFC Championship game.
San Francisco's Special Victims Unit handled the investigation which included an face to face interview with Crabtree at San Francisco police department headquarters.
