NBC Universal, Inc.

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and police held a press conference on Sunday morning regarding a deadly shooting that occurred Saturday night in West Oakland at DeFremery Park.

Police responded to the shooting in the 1600 block of Adeline Street just after 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The victim was taken to the hospital, where he died of his injuries, police said.

According to Thao and police, the shooting happened during the McClymonds High School Alumni Action Committee reunion picnic, which was held at the park.

Oakland police said during Sunday's news conference that the victim was just two days shy of his 39th birthday. Police are holding off on releasing the victim's name until his family can be reached.

Police believe there may have been more than one suspect in the incident.

The mayor Sunday morning said, "I am deeply saddened there was a shooting at the McClymonds Alumni Action Committee reunion picnic at DeFremery Park. We will not tolerate this type of violence, especially at a peaceful annual gathering."

"My heart is with the family of the victim and the entire McClymonds and West Oakland community," Thao said. "Ceasefire partners are actively working to prevent additional violence. Thank you to all of our first responders."

No other details were released.

The mayor said Oakland police are investigating and urged anyone with information to contact the Homicide Section at (510) 238-3821.
