We follow the route of a dangerous old road on a safe new trail high above the Pacific. We’ll discover why this stretch of the sensational California Coastal Trail, with its angelic vistas, once had a devilish reputation for motorists. For more than 70 years, California State Highway 1 snaked precariously through this treacherous spot called Devil’s Slide between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay. The hazardous highway was finally re-rerouted through nearby tunnels in 2013, and in 2014 the retired roadway was re-opened as a fully accessible section of the Coastal Trail managed and interpreted by San Mateo County Parks. We walk the trail, admire the scenery, learn about the geological, ecological and highway histories of Devil’s Slide and find out how it and its surrounding parks and open spaces were saved by citizens who fought for decades to protect the land they loved.
