Small earthquake shakes near Gilroy, USGS says

NBC Universal, Inc. The USGS is rolling out new update to the Shake Alert app to detect earthquakes earlier. Geologist Robert-Michael de Groot, who helped devise the app, discusses how much quicker we could start to get alerts.

A preliminary 2.6 magnitude earthquake struck early Monday morning near Gilroy, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The quake hit at 12:11 a.m. and was centered about 4 miles southwest of Gilroy, the USGS said.

No other information was immediately available. Updates to come.
