A 19-year-old man and his 18-year-old sister were shot and injured in Oakland early Sunday morning as they were sitting in a car.

The shooting happened at about 4:47 a.m. near the siblings' home in the area of 77th and Garfield avenues, the police union said through a spokesperson. The brother and sister were sitting in a car with their father when someone came up to the vehicle and opened fire, striking the siblings.

"It was like three shots," a neighbor, identified as Brittany, said. "They were really loud because it's right by my bedroom door. Then about five minutes later, we heard eight shots really loud and then, 'Let’s go, let’s go.'"

The father drove his injured children to the hospital, according to the police union. They were listed in critical but stable condition, police said.

Neither sibling has any criminal history, according to the police union. They were headed to a swap meet near the Coliseum to sell merchandise.

"As they were loading up in their vehicle, the suspect tried to open their door. That’s when the suspect initially engaged on their vehicle," Kyle Cardana with the Oakland Police Department said.

Neighbors said the family had just loaded up their car with bicycles and toys to sell when the suspects approached them.

"Super scary," Brittany said. "I definitely don’t even want to be living here anymore. I have two young girls. It’s not very comfortable hearing gunshots that loud by our bedrooms."

An investigation is underway. Anyone with information is asked to call the Oakland Police Department's Felony Assault Unit at 510-238-3426.

"We’re still trying to learn what the motive is and hopefully a thorough investigation will help reveal those details," Cardana said.
