NBC Universal, Inc. California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office on Tuesday released new numbers for the ongoing crime crackdown in the East Bay.

Oakland city leaders are reacting to the new numbers released Tuesday by Governor Gavin Newsom’s office of the ongoing crime crackdown in the city.

According to the governors’ office, the California Highway Patrol has made 168 arrests and recovered 360 stolen vehicles in Oakland in recent weeks as part of its undercover sting operations and law enforcement surges.

The suspects have been connected to gangs, organized crime, and carjacking rings.

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao released a statement regarding these new numbers, saying:

“The strong partnership between the Oakland Police Department and the California Highway Patrol is delivering results and is an example of good government at work. Together, we are holding criminal groups accountable and disrupting their networks … I am grateful to Governor Newsom for providing resources to support Oakland's public safety strategy.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom's office on Tuesday released new numbers for the ongoing crime crackdown in the East Bay.

Oakland City Councilmember Noel Gallo hopes the increase in law enforcement will continue around the city.

“We need that relationship to keep going, 'cause we continue to have the robberies, the assaults, and we need all the help we can get in the city of Oakland,” he said.

Thao’s office also released numbers Tuesday showing a decrease in crime around Oakland compared to last year - including a 40% decrease in auto burglaries downtown.
