Fiery crash in Fremont leaves 1 dead, closes down busy roadway

NBC Universal, Inc. One man was killed, and another badly injured in a fiery crash overnight in Fremont Tuesday. As Ian Cull reports, it happened on a stretch of road neighbors say is known for speeding.

A fiery crash early Tuesday morning left one person dead and shut down a busy roadway in Fremont for several hours, according to fire officials.

At about 12:40 a.m., Fremont police and fire crews responded to a "major collision" on Fremont Boulevard near Thornton Avenue, police said. Video footage from the scene showed a vehicle engulfed in flames.

One person was confirmed dead, and a second occupant in the vehicle was injured, fire officials said.

While video of the crash shows firefighters responding about six and a half minutes after the crash – a witness said it felt much longer.

He also said more traffic calming measures are needed on Fremont Boulevard to make drivers slow down.

“Every night people are speeding and racing down this street that used to be a one-way street in each way. Now, ever since they pulled it back to two lanes, there’s constant honking, there’s constant speeding,” said the witness.

The car hit the tree outside of Bogie's Discount Pet Food & Supplies, which was damaged from the debris on impact.

“You hear about this stuff all the time, and I’ve been in a few car accidents myself, but this is something else. This is crazy,” Angelo Martell of Bogie's Discount Pet Food & Supplies said.

Fremont Boulevard was closed between Thornton Avenue and Peralta Boulevard as police investigated the crash.
