Interstate 880 in Fremont, shut down at Thornton Avenue for several hours Sunday because of flooding, has reopened.
Two southbound lanes reopened just after 4 p.m. Northbound lanes reopened later Sunday. The on-ramps from Stevenson Boulevard to northbound 880 remained closed Monday morning due to flooding
The CHP blamed "drainage canal overflow" for the flooding. A slideout at a railroad crossing at Mowry Avenue, which passes over the freeway, carried mud and debris onto the roadway, Caltrans said.
The freeway was closed in both directions for most of the day Sunday as crews suctioned up all the excess water and mud.
Caltrans said its workers remain on standby with equipment in the area Monday as the region braced for another round of heavy rain.
