The Alameda County Sheriff's Office confirmed deputies shot and killed a man with a loaded gun at about 4 a.m. Saturday in a residential area of unincorporated Hayward after a confrontation that involved residents and officers.

Officers responded to the scene in the 24900 block of Second Street in the Fairview District, an unincorporated area of Hayward, after multiple calls of a man threatening them with a gun.

After establishing a perimeter and searching for a suspect, a shootout ensued. Alameda County Sheriff's officials said via a Facebook post that "the suspect had a considerable period of time to think about his actions before he opened fire on our deputies."

"We can confirm the suspect fired at our deputy first, narrowly missing him and almost striking him in the head with a bullet," the county's sheriff's office said.

The suspect has only been identified as a 26-year-old Filipino man "with an extensive and violent criminal history for shootings, assaults, robbery, weapons, burglary and auto theft."

Detectives and crime lab professionals remain on scene investigating the area.

"We are extremely fortunate that our deputies and members of the community were not killed," officials said. "We are in the process of notifying the deceased suspects family. We will release his name after that time."
