Oakland police on Thursday made an arrest in connection with the shooting death of 15-year-old Derbing Alvarado earlier this week, the police department confirmed Friday.
Oakland officers arrested a 16-year-old in the homicide that occurred Monday in the 1400 block of 100th Avenue, police said.
"I'm happy that they found somebody and I hope justice is served," family friend Sylvia Delgado said. "Derbing did not deserve what happened to him."
Alvarado, a sophomore at Cristo Rey De La Salle, was walking to soccer practice with a group of four friends when they were approached by two people. Alvarado ended up being shot four times during an attempted robbery after a gunman demanded his backpack.
The case will be presented to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office to determine charges, police said.
Family friends said they are still waiting for a second arrest and want both suspects to be tried as adults.
