Innocent bystander in critical condition after shooting near Oakland's Lake Merritt

NBC Universal, Inc.

A woman who was wounded in a shooting near Lake Merritt on Monday afternoon is in critical condition, police said.

Oakland police spokesperson Kim Armstead said the woman wasn't targeted by the shooter and was an "innocent bystander."

The shooting was reported about 12:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of Madison Street, a few blocks from Snow Park.

Emergency crews provided aid to the victim and she was taken to a hospital.

“The community seems welcoming so far, I know there’s some dangerous stuff happening but hopefully it doesn’t continue to taint Oakland as like a bad dangerous place,” said Melli of Oakland.

Police said the woman was a walker on the popular trail near Madison Street.

When officers got there, they said she had been shot. They’re calling her an innocent bystander – in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“I think that’s wild that did happen earlier today and I didn’t even know,” said Joey Thomas of Oakland, who lives near Lake Merritt. “As we all know, crime is out of control in Oakland, something needs to be done. I think nobody is addressing it.”

Oakland police did not provide a description of the suspect or suspects in the shooting.

It is an active investigation, so anyone with information should contact Oakland PD.
