An air quality advisory has been issued Wednesday and Thursday for the East Bay and South Bay following a fire at the Port of Oakland, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District said.
The smoke from the blaze is expected to impact Oakland, San Leandro, Fremont, Alameda, and parts of San Jose.
The blaze was first reported around 5:30 p.m. at Schnitzer Steel. Firefighters said that it was under control, but still not contained by 7:30 p.m.
"If the smell of smoke is present, it is important that Bay Area residents protect their health by avoiding exposure. If possible, stay inside with windows and doors closed until smoke levels subside. Set air conditioning units and car vent systems to re-circulate to prevent outside air from moving inside," the Bay Area Air Quality Management District said in a statement.
No injuries have been reported.
The fire is confined to a single pile at the recycling yard, located at 1100 Embarcadero West.
The fire department requested the City of Alameda's fire boat to provide support from the estuary.
Firefighters will likely remain at the scene for a few more hours, Hunt said. The cause is under investigation.
