The driver of a stolen vehicle being chased by a sheriff's deputy in San Jose crashed into another vehicle and later died of his injuries early Friday morning, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

The crash occurred at about 1:20 a.m. in the area of North First Street and Montague Expressway in North San Jose, officials said. Four other people were injured in the collision.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office said a sheriff's sergeant was involved in a pursuit of a stolen Honda CRV that ended when the driver ran a red light and slammed into a Toyota sedan. The chase started when the deputy identified the Honda as a vehicle stolen in a carjacking.

The preliminary investigation by San Jose police revealed the 2014 Honda was traveling southbound on North First Street when it ran the red light at Montague Expressway. The 2022 Toyota was traveling westbound on Montague, police said.

The man driving the Honda suffered major injuries and was taken to a local hospital, where he later died, police said. Three passengers in the Honda and the driver of the Toyota also were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident involves separate investigations, with the San Jose Police Department investigating the crash and the sheriff's office investigating the deputy pursuit, officials said. It was not immediately clear what prompted the pursuit.

Montague Expressway was shut down in both directions during the investigation.

It was the 29th traffic death in San Jose this year, police said.
