Grand jury indicts man accused of 2023 Half Moon Bay mass shooting

A grand jury has indicted Chunli Zhao, the man accused of carrying out a mass shooting in Half Moon Bay a year ago, with counts of murder and attempted murder, the San Mateo County district attorney said Monday.

Zhao faces seven counts of first degree murder and one count of attempted first degree murder in the on Jan. 23, 2023 shooting at two mushroom farms in Half Moon Bay. 

Zhao appeared in San Mateo County court Tuesday, but his arraignment was continued to Feb. 29. He remained in custody on a no-bail status, a court official said.

Tuesday marked one year since the mass shooting that left seven of Zhou's co-workers dead and one injured. 

Mayor Joaquin Jimenez told NBC Bay Area "thatโ€™s something, you know, we might never heal from it. Itโ€™s going to take decades before we can actually say we healed, but actually we may never heal from that."

On Monday, the Half Moon Bay community came together to remember the victims of the shooting. Another memorial event is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday.

A round table discussion involving Rep. Anna Eshoo and other local leaders is set to take place at noon Tuesday.
