Two Hayward police officers shot and killed a man who was allegedly armed with a BB gun Wednesday night, the city's acting police chief said Thursday.
The shooting occurred shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Foothill Boulevard and City Center Drive.
A witness had reported that a man pointed a firearm at two females in a vehicle. Three officers responded and the man allegedly pointed the firearm in the direction of the officers, prompting two to open fire, Acting Police Chief Bryan Matthews said.
The man died and his identity has not been released. The officers were not injured, and found a BB gun at the scene that matched the one described by the witness, Matthews said.
"Any loss of life is tragic and last night's incident is no exception," the chief said at a news conference Thursday afternoon.
He said Hayward police, the Alameda County District Attorney's Office and an independent consultant are investigating the case, and that all three officers present at the time are believed to have had their body-worn cameras on when the shooting occurred.
