Emergency crews in San Rafael responded Tuesday morning to a hazardous materials incident near the Northgate One shopping mall, and police issued a shelter-in-place alert for those in the area, according to the police department.
At about 8:35 a.m., a person was seen pouring out a green substance near the shopping center, and witnesses reported a strong odor as well as smoke, police said.
The precise location of the hazmat incident was not immediately clear, but police asked the public to avoid the area around Northgate One, which is bordered by Manuel Y. Freitas Parkway, Northgate Drive and Las Galinas Avenue.
Crews cleared the scene at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday and lifted the shelter alert, though some businesses remained closed until the hazardous material was completely cleaned up. No injuries were reported.
Police and emergency crews did not identify the substance, police said.
The incident is not related to COVID-19 or the vaccination center, police said.
