A high surf warning and coastal flood warning are in effect up and down the Bay Area coastline Thursday.
The dangerous conditions along the coast have triggered evacuation orders and warnings in some coastal communities.
The high surf warning, which covers the entire Bay Area coastline, is in effect until 3 a.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
Breaking waves could top out anywhere from 28 to 33 feet on west facing beaches and up to 40 feet in favored locations, the weather service said.
"Stay away from rocks, jetties, piers, and other waterside infrastructure," the weather service wrote on social media. "Never turn your back to the ocean!"
A coastal flood warning issued for beaches along the Pacific Ocean was in effect until 3 p.m. Thursday.
The weather service said large waves are causing significant flooding along beaches and coastal roads, and large debris is washing up on some coastal roads.
A coastal flood advisory was also issued for areas along the San Francisco Bay and was lifted Thursday afternoon.
