Hundreds of Bay Area students are one step closer to earning the highly coveted National Merit Scholarships.
Having been named semifinalists, the students are in the running for a $2,500 scholarship. School-goers from Cupertino, San Jose, Palo Alto, Fremont and Oakland occupy a chunk of the 2,500 available spots.
Roughly 16,000 high school students nationwide qualified as semifinalists based on their 2015 Preliminary SAT (PSAT) scores.
To advance to finalist standing, the semifinalists must complete an application, provide academic transcripts, write an essay, receive a recommendation from a school official, and earn an SAT score that confirms the PSAT performance.
Finalists will be notified by mail in early February.
A list of all semifinalists in California is below. The results are designated by city and high school.
