Judge orders Oakland airport to stop using new name amid trademark battle with SFO

The Oakland International Airport has just been ordered to keep its old name.

Oakland's airport on Tuesday was ordered by a judge to keep its old name, Oakland International Airport.

A judge issued a temporary injunction for the airport to stop using the name San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport.

Oakland International Airport changed its name earlier this year. Commissioners with the Port of Oakland, which is in charge of the Oakland airport, argued the new name would help boost flights into the East Bay city.

San Francisco’s city attorney sued and said the name change is confusing and violates copyright infringement.

The judge agreed with the copyright violation on Tuesday, saying San Francisco spent millions to develop its brand. The judge also ordered Oakland airport to remove any signs with the new name.

The Port of Oakland responded to the ruling and said in part: “The court order temporarily blocks OAK’s new name on the basis of the third type of alleged confusion: that travelers may think OAK is affiliated with SFO."

Port of Oakland officials went onto to argue that's not the case, and will consider all its options, including appealing the ruling.
