A closer look at why crews will demolish dams on the Klamath River

This coming January will mark the final leg of the massive project to remove four hydroelectric dams from the Klamath River in Northern California, freeing the river for the first time in over a century. With the removal of the first dam last summer, crews will begin draining the reservoirs behind the remaining three dams, with final demolition scheduled to begin next summer. The project is aimed at restoring the river’s once historic salmon and steelhead runs – vital to the Native American tribes living along the 277 mile river which runs from Southern Oregon to the Pacific Ocean in Northern California.
