What remains of San Francisco's once diverse nightlife scene is losing two prominent fixtures.
The Lexington Club will close this weekend, while representatives for neighborhood nightclub Elbo Room have announced that it will shutter in November.
There has been speculation as to the fate of the Elbo Room, known for supporting live and DJ-driven music genres like dub, dancehall, and hip-hop, which has for months been rumored to be on the chopping block for the development of condos.
"[Owners] Dennis and Susan Ring had a meeting with the powers that be and they seem quite confident that their condo project will be able to move forward. As a result, they have decided not to renew our lease, which expires November 1, 2015," Matt Shapiro and Erik Cantu, representing the staff of Elbo Room, said in a statement.
Shapiro is soliciting public leads for possible new locations so that the Elbo Room can continue to represent a cornerstone of underground sounds in San Francisco.
The website for the 18-year-old Lexington Club, which was sold in February, describes it as "your friendly neighborhood dyke bar."
48 Hills noted that the final closing parties take place on April 24-25 and there's a fundraising campaign to hopefully secure a commemorative plaque outside the bar at 19th and Lexington Streets.
